An American expat in Australia believes she has finally cracked the code on why “everybody hates Americans.”
Tay Marin has lived in Australia for six years and received a harsh reality check when she moved house for the first time.
“You have no idea how the rest of the world sees us,” he told his fellow Americans in a video. “We’re not the bosses; we’re considered loud and obnoxious.”
Tay urged Americans to educate themselves about other countries and travel abroad if they can afford it.
“Please educate yourself about the rest of the world: the whole world is not the United States,” he said. ‘There’s so much more out there and it’s so beautiful, and I know not everyone can travel like me. I’m very lucky for that.’
Tay explained that people see the United States the same way the United States sees Florida.
‘We are seen as pretty crazy people. You know how all Americans think everyone from Florida is crazy? That’s how the world feels about us.
“Don’t get me started on guns, or presidents, or anything political, but know that everyone thinks we’re going backwards and no one is excited about it.”
The expatriate claimed that most Americans couldn’t laugh at themselves.
“Please learn sarcasm and have a little humor,” Tay said.
He also recommended his fellow Americans watch English comedian Ricky Gervais because “he makes a lot of jokes about America.”
Tay Marin has lived in Australia for six years.
The expatriate noted that Americans tend to shout when they speak.
“Seriously, calm down,” Tay said. ‘You’re a level ten, I’m going to need you to be a level four. We don’t need to express all our thoughts out loud.’
He added: “When you’re in a restaurant, you don’t need to tell everyone how you feel, what you’re doing, your whole life story.”
Tay also noted that he has heard of too many American travelers trying to pay with U.S. dollars in countries that don’t accept it.
“Please take a map,” he said.
Some people in the comments agreed with Tay’s point of view.
“I feel like the rest of the world sees us as a screaming child in a restaurant,” said one American.
‘I’m from australia. “I went to the US on holiday and someone asked me what language we use in Australia because my English was pretty good,” said one.
A third added: “I swear I’ve never heard an American speak in a low or normal voice.”
“Can we also add that the rest of the world does not celebrate Thanksgiving or the 4th of July, and that the southern hemisphere has opposite seasons?” one wrote.
