Dr. Teresa Irwin, a pelvic medicine doctor from Texas, posted a series of videos on TikTok last month detailing four methods for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles.
The pelvic floor muscles are located between the tailbone and pelvis and support the uterus, bladder, small intestine, and rectum.
These muscles can be weakened by various causes, mainly pregnancy and childbirth.
If left untreated, it can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction, which has been linked to urinary incontinence, frequent urination, and constipation.
It can also make it harder to reach orgasm.
Dr. Irwin shared four tips for tightening your pelvic floor and having better orgasms.
Kegel exercises

Typically, Kegel exercises are performed by lifting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles. One way to find them is to stop urinating halfway.
‘I know you’ve all probably heard the advice to ‘do Kegel exercises’, but why?’ Dr Irwin told NeedtoKnowUK.
‘The pelvic floor muscles line the inside of the pelvic bone; They act as a net to keep the reproductive and elimination organs in place.’
“When the pelvic floor weakens, it can no longer hold those organs in place and can lead to prolapse and other dysfunctions.”
Typically, Kegel exercises are performed by lifting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles. One way to find them is to stop urinating halfway.
“I want you to focus on, instead of holding your pee, holding your poop,” Dr. Irwin said.
“So it tightens the anal sphincter because there are more muscles and bigger muscles around the anus.”
“So when you squeeze your anal sphincter, you’re actually contracting a much larger muscle than when you hold in urine.”
He said this is because the muscles surrounding the urethra are much smaller.
Kegel exercises help tighten your pelvic floor muscles, which increases sensation and makes you more likely to experience an orgasm.
Belly Dance and Yoga

One way to strengthen orgasms, Dr. Irwin said, is to do Kegel exercises while practicing yoga or belly dancing.
This is achieved by combining Kegel exercises with exercises such as belly dancing and yoga.
“The way you can do it is that every time you do a belly dance move, at the end or even during it, you can do a Kegel exercise and tighten your anus,” Dr. Irwin said.
“In the case of yoga, you can do it throughout the movement.”
He used the downward moving dog as an example. “You just squeeze the sphincter at the same time,” she said.
“So, not only are they great exercises for your body, but they are also amazing for your sexual organs.”
Yoga works the muscles in various areas of the body, particularly the pelvic floor muscles. Certain positions calm the vagus nerve, which is responsible for the body’s fight or flight response.
Reducing this response prevents involuntary contractions, giving you more control over sensations like orgasms.
Breathing exercises known as hypopressives.
“This is a rare but very effective technique for strengthening the pelvic floor,” said Dr. Irwin.
‘It is a breathing exercise that helps strengthen the core to relieve pressure on the pelvic floor by learning to lift and support the weight of the organs through the supporting muscles.’
This breathing exercise should be combined with Kegels.
“During this type of exercise, you’re actually practicing some breathing techniques,” Dr. Irwin said.
“The benefit of this is that deep breathing expands the stomach in and out, and when you hold your breath at the end, you can do a Kegel exercise.”
“So not only does it improve orgasmic ability, but it can also shrink your belly, which in turn makes you feel sexier and increases your libido.”
Deep breathing can release nitric oxide in the body, which increases arousal and orgasm by stimulating blood flow.
Sound wave machines

Cliovana is a type of sound wave treatment that specifically targets the clitoris, an organ at the end of the vulva that plays an important role in a woman’s sexual arousal.
Dr. Irwin also suggests using a machine called Cliovana which she says is designed “to enhance orgasmic ability.”
Cliovana is a type of sound wave treatment that specifically targets the clitoris, an organ at the end of the vulva that plays an important role in sexual arousal in women.
“The sound waves hit the clitoris, causing small micro-tears, which causes the body’s natural defense mechanisms to reach there and grow new blood vessels and new nerves,” Dr. Irwin said.
“This means an improvement in tissue quality and orgasmic capacity.”
This treatment is usually performed in doctors’ offices over several weeks. In addition to achieving stronger orgasms, it is intended to increase libido and improve vaginal lubrication.
However, there is no research that has found direct benefits.
Aiming directly at the clitoris can greatly increase your chances of achieving orgasm, as stimulating that area has been shown to be much more effective for satisfaction than penetration, for example.
