Beauty expert Hannah Betts predicts biome-boosting beauty will brew everywhere this year (file image)

One of the most fun aspects of the not-so-fun month of January is predicting the trends we will succumb to next year.

As one moves into middle age and beyond, we may embrace fads less enthusiastically (or at least less hysterically).

And yet, recognizing the passage of time is key to not seeming outdated.

The style changes I have chosen here will give you better skin, more modern hair, fashionable claws and modernized makeup.

All of which will keep middle-aged beauties not only looking up-to-date, but positively ahead of the curve in 2025.

bio beauty

The beauty that will drive the biome will be brewing everywhere. Because the skin is the same as the intestine: it houses millions of microorganisms that protect against pathogens and affect immunity.

Get the right facial flora and you will be relieved of midlife complexion crises. Try Cultured Biomecare.

Their Biome One Cleansing Balm (£32, culturedbiomecare.com) is a revelation. While their Biome One Rich Cream (£55) targets dehydration and photodamage that affects people over 50.

Tactile textures

Influenced by Korean beauty, skincare and makeup will manifest in a variety of jellies, milks and broths during 2025. It will focus on tactility: products that feel glorious to the touch, whether for the face or body .

One of the smartest textures I’ve come across is Dolce & Gabbana’s new Everlast foundation (£49, harrods.com).

Described as a ‘3D matte’, it’s matte, but next-generation: smooth, velvety, blurry, lustrous vivid. I’m a dewy foundation addict, but even I love it.

Long hair has never gone away for those of us for whom the undone look didn’t seem glamorous enough.

Now everyone wants to participate. Fashion’s favorite stylist, Sam McKnight MBE, tells me: ‘Volume will be bigger than ever – explosive blowouts, supermodel volume, movies and ’90s waves. One-length cuts don’t work here: layers maintain volume.’

daffodil nails

Nothing looks more youthful than an unexpectedly colorful mani.

Hollywood stars Blake Lively and Elle Fanning have been spotted in yellow, meaning light shades seem to reign supreme.

Be an early adopter of Kiko’s Smart Lacquer in Yellow (£3.99, kiko cosmetics.com).

Bold eyes and discreet lips.

To accompany the long hair, there will be a return to old school glamour. Winged eyeliner is back, albeit in a more playful way than those blocky noir films of the 2010s.

Pair it with sheer lips for effortless youth: Lip balm sales are up 130 percent at Cult Beauty, compared to 13 percent for lipstick.

My adult balm obsession: Dior Addict Lip Glow in 63 Pink Lilac (£33, Dior.com) for cool complexions, or 76 Tangerine, for warm-toned women.

Bye characteristic aroma

Scents are the beauty area on the rise thanks to #PerfumeTok, the hashtag that experienced 110 percent growth during the first ten months of 2024.

Sales of small vials rose three times faster than full-size ones during 2024, according to analysts Circana.

Driven by experimental youth, we seem to be hooked on buying varieties of minis, rather than committing to signature scents.

MY ICON OF THE WEEK

Demi Moore

The actress, 62, wore an equally winning look to collect her Golden Globe.

Makeup artist Rokael Lizama mixed two Diorshow 5 Couleurs palettes: #559 Poncho and #539 Grand Bal (£58 each, sephora.co.uk) with Rouge Dior Blush in #257 Dioriviera (£48).

Dimitris Giannetos styled the star’s locks with Moroccan Dry Texture Spray (£19.45).

COSMETIC CRAVING

Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Cream (£92, dermalogica.co.uk) is the unique way to repair our skin.

There’s no better way to describe New Year’s skin than “stressed.” And right now, none of us have the bandwidth to think about or deal with complexion distress; We simply want to organize our skin in the strictest way possible.

The new Dermalogica Power Recovery Multivitamin Cream is the way. Launching tomorrow, it’s packed with vitamins, antioxidants and skin-repairing peptides that fight the four key signs of skin stress: dryness, dullness, sagging and fine lines.

The season’s most popular ingredient, Astaxanthin, from red algae, firms and lifts to improve overall tone and elasticity.

Simply buy, apply and free your skin from stress.
