Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, 25, was detained by a group of vigilantes who detected a resemblance between him and a wanted poster posted after the June 13 attack.
Inga-Landi, 25, approached the girl and a 13-year-old boy with whom she was brandishing a machete and forced them into a remote area of Kissena Corridor Park, police said.
He allegedly tied the teens’ wrists with shoelaces before carrying out the sickening attack.
Fox News reports that the suspect is an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who entered the United States through the southern border three years ago, citing law enforcement sources.
A suspected illegal immigrant arrested for the rape of a 13-year-old girl in a New York City park was tied to a light pole by an angry mob who detained him until police arrived.
The man allegedly has several previous low-level crimes, including drinking in public and jumping subway turnstiles.
He was arrested after neighbors recognized him from a search photo and restrained him while they called 911.
One image showed the shirtless suspect being led away by police wearing only one shoe after the fight with a group of locals led by resident Jeffrey Flores, who told the New York Post that he had seen him hanging around the warehouse recently.
He tried to escape but Flores managed to tie him up with a friend’s belt.
“The community was holding our perpetrator,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny.
The attack took place on Thursday about three miles from Citi Field, in the neighborhood of the victim’s school.
A man approached the children with a knife and forced them into a wooded area, police said.
After the attack, he fled with his phones but left behind the shoelaces and a bottle of water which are being forensically analysed. C.B.S. reports.

Inga-Landi told police she had a drug problem and had never done anything like that before the attack, ABC7 reports.
“Between the brave work of those kids, who are scarred for life, and the community, this person is off the street,” said Chief of Patrol John Chell.
On Monday, community leaders gathered to demand that cameras be installed in the park while handing out search fliers announcing a $10,000 reward for information on the culprit.
The incident has shocked locals and left the park virtually deserted in recent days.
‘It is shocking. This park is usually full. “Parents use this as a waiting place to pick up children,” resident Bernard Chow told CBS.
