An illegal migrant from El Salvador was arrested in Maryland and charged with murder in the case of a two-year-old boy who was shot to death this month.

Nilson Trejo-Granados, 25, was charged this week by the Prince George’s County Police Department with first- and second-degree murder.

The illegal migrant is the fifth person arrested in connection with the tragic death of child Jeremy Poou Caceres, who met his end while walking in the park with his mother.

On February 8, Jeremy and his mother were walking on Kanawha Street in Langley Park when gunshots broke out between two groups of men.

The boy and his mother were caught in the crossfire and Jeremy was fatally wounded. He was taken to National Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Law enforcement officials say the shots were intended for Jeremy and his mother.

Before the fatal encounter, Trejo-Granados, according to ICE and police records, had had several run-ins with the law.

In March of last year, Montgomery police charged him with robbery. That arrest led ICE to file an immigration detainer against the criminal.

The local police department, however, refused to honor the arrest warrant and subsequently released Trejo-Granados back to the public.

He was arrested again by MCPD in September 2023. He was charged with robbery and attempted obstruction and obstruction.

ICE again unsuccessfully filed an immigration detainer that was not honored.

Even before all that, a Justice Department immigration judge in Newark, New Jersey, ordered the man’s removal from the United States in November 2022.

Now, Trejo-Granados allegedly killed a baby, MCDC will choose whether to keep him detained or not following an ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) request in Baltimore.

The Prince George’s County Police Homicide Unit also arrested and charged two local teenagers, ages 15 and 16, as well as two other men who they believe drove a stolen car to the crime scene and began shooting.

All those involved have been charged as adults and are being held without bail.
