Frantic guests could be heard screaming as the restaurant was quickly swept away by the wave, and debris was seen crashing into the bar area after patrons began watching South Africa play Romania in the Rugby World Cup.
The force of the wave pushed some guests to the back of the bar at Marina Beach, KwaZulu-Natal state, before the strong current swept seven terrified patrons into the sea on Sunday.
Guests could be heard shouting “there’s a child here” while at least one person was seen being dragged into the sea.
A witness who filmed the incident said he had tried to reach the girl but was unable to reach her due to the strength of the current. He said two lifeguards managed to pull her out of the sea after running towards her.

The Mi7 National Group stated: “The incident occurs during a period of high tides, causing damage to coastal cities on the east coast of the country.
“We also advise against visiting KZN beaches for recreational purposes until the tides go out and it is safe to do so.” The high waves subsided Monday afternoon.
