Ilkay Gundogan has admitted he could leave Manchester City this summer due to limited playing time in ‘important games’.

As reported by sports post earlier this month, Pep Guardiola’s first signing was told he is free to seek another club with a contract of one more year at the Etihad Stadium.

Gundogan has played hard this season, starting 20 Premier League games out of 38 in a squad brimming with midfield options.

The 31-year-old has revealed he is undecided on his future and will have a ‘sit down’ with the club in due course.

Talk to Kicker on sports witnesshe said, ‘We’ll sit down together in due course and exchange our ideas and plans, and then we’ll see what comes out.

“Football-wise there is certainly still no better place than Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, and I don’t think that will change much in the coming years.

“Of course I would have liked to have played a little longer in one or two important games in recent months. That’s no secret. I’m a player who always wants to play.’

It is clear that the player has been informed that an extension of his existing deal is unlikely. And, given Gundogan’s service, he’s been given the opportunity to explore options elsewhere with 12 months remaining.

Gundogan was the hero on the final day of the season when his brace helped City from behind to beat Aston Villa and lead Liverpool to the Premier League title by one point.

He has been in Manchester for six years. He is a key statesman on the squad, one of the five vice-captains, and acted as Fernandinho’s vice-skipper.

Since moving from Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan has scored 49 goals and provided 33 assists in 253 appearances in all competitions.

He is also the most decorated German footballer to ever play in England, having won the Premier League and League Cup four times, as well as the FA Cup three years ago.
