Idris Elba has revealed he has been in therapy to help deal with “unhealthy habits” he developed from working in the entertainment industry.
In the final episode of the Changes with Annie Macmanus podcastthe Hijack The actor said he started therapy about a year ago because he realized he is an “absolute workaholic,” which is “not good for life in general.”
“During my therapy, I thought a lot about changing, almost to the point where neuropaths shifted and changed,” he explained. “And it’s not because I don’t like myself or anything like that, it’s just that I have some unhealthy habits that I’ve just really formed and, you know, I work in an industry where I get rewarded for those unhealthy habits. to use.”
The Luther star continued: “Nothing too extreme is okay. Everything needs balance. But I’m greatly rewarded for being a workaholic, for someone who can say, ‘Oh, I’m not going to see my family for six months.’ I’m in there, grinding and starting a new family, then leaving them behind. You know, those are processes where I had to be like, I have to adapt.
Elba said he is working on activities that allow him to relax while still feeling productive. But he noted that finding the balance is a challenge because “the things that relax me end up being work.”
When he’s not acting, he focuses on his music career as a DJ, and while he enjoys being in his home studio, at the end of the day it’s still work.
“I open that laptop and say, ‘I don’t know what to make today,’ and today it’s going to come out like this and like that, and I’m happy about it, but it also makes me relaxed,” he said of his work habits. “I could have worked on a movie for ten days, underwater scenes, holding my breath for six minutes, and come back and sit here (in the studio) and (be relaxed), even more so than on the couch watching TV watching with the family, which is bad, right? And this is the part where I have to normalize a little bit, which relaxes me. It can’t all be work.”
But Elba’s career shows no signs of slowing down, including several projects in the works Sonic the Hedgehog 3 And Heads of State.
