Sydney's Bistrot 916 restaurant in Potts Point to be demolished by the end of 2024

A popular French bistro has announced its shock closure at the end of 2024 and customers are “devastated” by the news.

Sydney’s Bistrot 916 restaurant in Potts Point will be demolished as a result of ongoing works on Challis Avenue.

The go-to spot is known for its “classic and delicious” French food “without the obnoxious price tag” and has nearly 500 five-star customer reviews.

Bistrot 916, the brainchild of owners Dan Pepperell, Andy Tyson and Michael Clift, first opened its doors to customers in February 2021.

The trio have since added two more restaurants to the Sydney must-visit list: Clam Bar in the CBD and Pellegrino 2000 in Surry Hills, where superstars Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter were seen dining earlier this year.

Another beloved restaurant, Big Poppa’s, is also closing due to construction in the area.

Bistrot 916 may close its doors permanently in Potts Point, but the owners are looking for another location to relocate the iconic restaurant.

The restaurant shared the announcement on Instagram:

‘We regret to announce that Bistrot 916 will soon cease trading to make room for an imminent property development.

‘As we prepare to turn out the lights and wait for the wrecking ball to approach, we invite you to an evening of final celebration.

“We would like to send our deepest thanks to all our amazing staff past and present and our beautiful customers – it has been a pleasure.”

The post received hundreds of comments from foodies lamenting the “huge loss” to Sydney’s restaurant scene.

“Bistrot 916 is my favorite place in Potts Point,” one woman said. “This is terrible news.”

“One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Sydney,” wrote another. ‘A very beautiful, cozy and romantic decoration.’

Others also praised Bistrot 916’s exquisite desserts and expert wine selection.

“We close this chapter with a mixture of pride and nostalgia,” Clift told the Sydney Morning Herald.

‘It is a pity. “We are very happy with the restaurant: the atmosphere is incredible, our team is fantastic and it is busier than ever,” added Tyson.
