Ian Wright has been praised by fans for addressing the “elephant in the room” during a Sky Sports segment about Pep Guardiola’s achievements as Manchester City manager.

The club received 115 charges relating to financial information on income, coach and player remuneration details, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability and cooperation with Premier League investigations in February 2023.

They will have their day in court to defend themselves against the charges. The specific date has not been made public.

Following Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and City, Wright and Jamie Carragher discussed the legacies of the two managers, with the Arsenal legend keen to mention the uncertainty that still hangs over the heads of those associated with the defending champions.

“We can’t talk about City without talking about the fact that there are 115 positions around him.” He said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

“What I would like most is for that to disappear from City so I can give the team and the coach the love they deserve.

‘Because when you talk about them, there’s an elephant in the room. With this rivalry, you want to talk about them without saying “yeah, but.”

“It’s not fair for the players or the club, so the sooner it happens, the better.”

Wright’s comments quickly drew praise from fans, mainly those of Liverpool and Arsenal, on social media, with several praising the former striker for highlighting the situation.

“Honestly (Ian Wright) is a brilliant expert,” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter. “Very well spoken, points expertly articulated and yet manages to remain unbiased and relatable. This is the kind of coverage we want.”

Another said: ‘Fair play to him.’ He’ll get pelers for it, but he’s right.

“First man to mention it in heaven,” wrote a third. Another added: “Heaven finally recognizes it.”

Mail Sport understands the Premier League and Manchester City have agreed a date when they will face an independent panel in possibly the largest audience in the competition’s history.

Those familiar with the situation believe a conclusion may not be reached until the end of next season, which is when City manager Guardiola’s current contract expires.
