Former Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe leads celebrity arrivals at Sydney launch of The Sapphire Project

Ian Thorpe struggled against the cold weather as he stepped outside for The Sapphire Project launch Tuesday in Sydney.

The 38-year-old former Olympic swimmer stepped out in a pinstripe blazer with a black scarf tied around his neck for the charity event.

He rounded out his all-black ensemble with a knit sweater, tapered trousers and lace-up shoes.

Ian seemed to be in a good mood for the event, smiling brightly and posing for photos with other guests.

The former world champion lovingly hugged underwater photographer Valerie Taylor as they posed together on the black carpet.

Valerie, 85, leaned her head against Ian’s chest and smiled happily as they turned it up for photographers.

An engrossed Ian even held Valerie’s hand as she stood talking to him on the black carpet before the event.

And it wasn’t just Valerie who was enamored with the former freestyler, with Tourism Australia director Hayley Baillie wrapping her arms around him in a hug.

Also in attendance was Jarrod Scott, showing off his modeling moves, posing with a blue umbrella.
