A young Australian woman has slammed a cafe after being charged $6 for an extra egg in her breakfast.
Alyssa Jayne, from the Gold Coast in Queensland, paid $13 for ‘eggs your way’ which came with two slices of toast but only one egg.
When he went to add an extra egg as a side, his bill increased significantly.
‘Does anyone know, broken down, how much it costs a coffee shop when someone adds an extra egg, for example, how much that extra egg would cost them, because why the fuck does it cost us $6?’ he said in a TikTok.
‘$6?! No no no no. I’m not spending six dollars on a single poached egg.’
She said the fact that her meal didn’t come with two eggs was already “criminal” as there were two slices of bread.
“I understand he wants to make a profit, but surely that’s like stealing lightly,” Mrs. Jayne said.
“I can go to Coles and buy a 12-pack of eggs for $5 or $6 and you tell me you’re charging me $6 for my one egg.”
Alyssa Jayne has questioned why cafes charge so much for sides after she had to shell out $6 for an extra egg with her breakfast.
Jayne said that when she worked at a diner as a teenager, the business charged customers an extra $2 if they asked for their eggs to be cooked in a different style than what was on the menu.
“$2 to like doing a different motion with your hand,” he said.
Her TikTok has been viewed more than 20,000 times, with many commenters wondering why meals weren’t cheaper when certain items were removed.
‘And why when I ask to remove the poached egg from my Caesar salad, isn’t the salad $6 cheaper?’ one wrote.
‘Poached eggs should always be 2 eggs. The menu item was called “poached egg,” said another?
‘Now they’re charging $6 to add avocado. I already had to remove the bacon and cheese from my meal, but you didn’t subtract it from the price,’ one commented.
“When I go out to breakfast I buy Eggs Benny but I always want to add tomato, avocado and hash brown but then I remember it would be $16 and that’s criminal,” another comment reads.
Others pointed out that it had nothing to do with the cost of the egg, but rather the cost of labor.
‘Owner of a café here. A single egg costs 0.36, but the cost of doing business is about $180,000 a year in staff, utilities and rent, not including the cost of produce (raw food price),’ said one.
‘Because you pay for the egg, the person who cooks it, the water, the electricity…’, commented another.
It comes amid an egg shortage in Australia following the detection of bird flu on farms across the country.
On Thursday, Woolworths imposed a two-pack limit per person on egg cartons due to a “backlog” in stock.

The limits will apply to stores in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria, while other states will not be affected.
“Along with other retailers, we expect a short-term delay in stock at one of our egg suppliers in New South Wales, ACT and Victoria, due to the temporary closure of one of their packaging warehouses,” a Woolworths spokesperson said. .
“Their supply is expected to recover over the next week as they ramp up operations at their other sites.”
Woolworths’ decision came behind rival Coles, which previously imposed its own two-box limit.
Coles rationing applies nationwide, with the exception of Western Australia.
Woolworths said its measure was a “precaution” and anticipated it would soon be lifted.
“Right now, most customers only buy one carton of eggs at a time and there is no reason why that should change,” the spokesperson said.
“We encourage shoppers to be mindful of others and continue to purchase only what they would normally purchase.”
Bird flu has been confirmed on two farms in New South Wales and eight in Victoria.
More than a million birds are expected to be destroyed in Victoria due to the outbreak and the death toll in New South Wales is more than 320,000.
