A woman who wanted to give her old kitchen a new look spent just £302 transforming it herself for a fraction of the price.

Ugne Litvinaite, 29, bought her two-bedroom home in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, almost three years ago.

But recently, she decided she wanted to modernize her kitchen, a room she hadn’t touched since she moved in.

However, when he looked into kitchen installation companies, Ugne realised it would cost between £3,000 and £4,500 – a sum he could not afford.

Ugne saw several renovation videos on TikTok and decided to give it a go herself. She spent most of June working on her kitchen and spent a total of £302.

Ugne, a manager at an insurance and technology company, said: “It was definitely cheaper than I expected. I’ve spent £302 on the renovation so far.”

“I still want to install vinyl flooring, which will cost me around £150 more. I’m very happy with the results.”

The conversion included the installation of a boiler cupboard and wine rack, which cost £170.

Ugne primed and painted the cupboards and one wall for a total of £92. He also added new handles to the cupboards for £22.

The tools he used to sand the surfaces before applying primer and paint were borrowed from his father, so he didn’t have to buy any equipment.

The kitchen worktops were then wrapped in vinyl, which was a total bargain at £18 in B&Q.

Ugne was relatively new to the world of DIY renovations, but savings are a good motivator.

‘Next up is the living room. I’ve built in more storage space and I’m going to paint the walls and put in new flooring. Again, it’s something I haven’t done before.’

This comes after another clever woman gave her old kitchen a modern makeover for just £200.

Leanne Ward, 33, from Derbyshire, and her husband Ash decided to renovate their kitchen and give it a touch of their “eclectic boho with a touch of modern decor”.

The room was originally painted cream with dated wooden cupboards and Leanne decided to give it a makeover on a budget, taking inspiration from Pinterest and focusing on tiles and cupboards for a quick fix.

Leanne and Ash painted their cabinets, tiles and floor with special paints, bought new cabinet handles, added vinyl to refresh the countertops and terrazzo chips to give the room a modern feel.

They then sealed the floor and added tile trim and a D-molding for backsplash protection.

Their efforts left the room unrecognizable, with sleek black cabinets, cool cream tiles, a classic wood-style countertop, and a light floor with elegant terrazzo details.

The 33-year-old said: ‘When we moved in, the kitchen was the one area I thought we were going to have to knock down and start completely from scratch.

‘Our plan was to live with it while we saved up, and then consider removing the adjoining wall and making a kitchen-dining space.

‘I think I lasted about eight months before looking for cheap ways to upgrade it.’

Leanne said: ‘Even if you can only afford to do a little at a time, small changes can still make a big difference.’

She advised people who are transforming a space on a budget to research her products.

Leanne said: ‘There are so many options available these days that it doesn’t always mean the most expensive is the best.’

“My favorite part of the kitchen is either the open shelving or the terrazzo-effect flooring. I think both were integral parts of the design that made the kitchen feel more modern,” she said.
