I flew from Scotland to Denmark for 24 hours for a family trip to Legoland; flights were £30 and £180 cheaper than going to Windsor.

A Scottish family flew to Denmark for 24 hours to go to Legoland after winning £30 on return flights – and they say it was cheaper than a day trip to Windsor.

Nicola, 46, and her husband Alan Sutcliffe, 57, from Glasgow, took their son Matthew, 8, to Legoland Billund after realizing it was cheaper than going to Legoland Windsor.

The family spent around £30 on return flights each, flying from Edinburgh Airport on April 7 before spending the night in a shared room at Legoland for £165.

They spent the next day exploring Legoland and having dinner before flying back the next night.

Despite spending all their money overnight to get a cheap deal, Nicola and Alan still estimate they saved around £184 and were so wowed by the Danish hospitality that they plan to return.

Primary school teacher Nicola, from Glasgow, Scotland, said: ‘We were going to go to Windsor but realized the original is in Denmark and is the home of Lego.

Breakdown of costs for Nicola and Aaron’s trip to Billund from Edinburgh:

Return flights for the whole family: £93

LegoLand and Lego House – £230

Hotel – £165

Total: £488

Approximate cost of the trip to Windsor from Edinburgh

Return trains: £585

Legoland entry: £29 each (online) £68 (on the day)

Total: £672

Approximate savings: £184

‘It’s also where the original Lego factory is, so we had a lot of things to accomplish getting there.

“For the three of us it was less than £100 [the flights] – we were laughing!’

Nicola had planned to go to Legoland Windsor but was shocked when she realized a return train would cost £195 each.

The family thought it was a no-brainer to go to Denmark after getting cheap flights back.

Nicola said: ‘We literally went for the cheap flights; It had to be a 24 hour trip to get the deal.

‘We just brought a small backpack. We didn’t need to wear jackets because it wasn’t raining. The airport is also five minutes from Legoland.

‘Whereas if we had gone to Windsor, we would have had to take the train to London and take different connecting trains and buses.

‘It was incredible. We got a deal from Super.com for a private room at the Legoland hotel for £165.

“We had views of the park and had a fabulous breakfast with pastries, pancakes and delicious coffee.”

The family landed at 10:00 p.m. on April 7 and went straight to bed.

The next day they explored Legoland, the Lego house, and had pizza at a local restaurant before catching their return flight at 9:55 pm and landing in Edinburgh at 10:30 pm.

Nicola said: ‘The hotel was fabulous – Denmark is amazing, everyone is so friendly and it’s not as commercial as the UK.

‘The park is a five-minute walk from Lego House. It was amazing and has the best Lego build in the world.

“I can’t imagine how much it would have been if we’d gone to London – it was an incredible 24 hours.”

‘It was 16 degrees and the sun was shining, so we only brought a few pairs of underwear and bottles of water.

‘That’s the good thing about carrying light: you don’t worry about what you’re carrying. “We are already trying to plan to do it again.”

Using low-cost airline Ryanair, the Sutcliffes managed to get return flights for the whole family for just £93.

The Scottish family spent the next day exploring Legoland and having dinner before flying back at 9:55 p.m.

This comes after a savvy Brit scored a flight back to Romania for just £32 for a 24-hour spa break, which she claimed was £100 cheaper than in the UK.

Rebecca Kellet, 37, and her best friend Sam Martin, 34, flew from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest, Romania, at 10am on November 19, 2023.

The couple then headed to their hotel, which cost them £40 each, and visited a few bars before their spa visit.

The next day, Rebecca and Sam visited Therme Spa in Bucharest, Romania, which cost them £25.85 each – a pleasant surprise after the couple grew tired of the local spa’s price gouging.

In total, between flights, accommodation and spa, the trip cost the couple just £97.85 each, which they claim is £100 cheaper than their usual spa day in the UK.
