A recruitment consultant told how she was too afraid to close her eyes in the shower because of a “horrible” campaign of harassment by a truck driver she helped find a job.

Jennifer Pickering, 32, had met Jan Schlossar only once before he started sending her sexually explicit messages, moved house to be closer to her and even proposed to her at her workplace.

Schlossar, 42, has been jailed after continuing to harass her despite receiving a restraining order.

But Mrs Pickering, from Leicester, said she fears he will “never give up” and continue to harass her.

“I was so afraid of him that I couldn’t close my eyes in the shower, because I was convinced he would be looking at me when I opened them,” she said.

‘The fact that it took three court cases shows how bad the situation had to get before anything could be done.

“At first I was angry, I felt like an easy target. I felt so helpless. But now I can see that the police were trying to build a bigger case so that he would receive a longer sentence.

“He was relentless and wouldn’t take no for an answer. She became obsessed and wouldn’t leave me alone. I’m afraid he’ll come back to haunt me.

She first met Schlossar in March 2022, after he applied for a job as a truck driver for which she had posted an ad in her position at a recruiting company.

Days later, she called to discuss the details and an hour later she showed up at his office to apply in person. “I felt strange from the moment I met him,” Mrs Pickering said. “The way he looked at me and spoke to me seemed strange from the first meeting.”

While applying, Schlossar took four hours to fill out a form that should take 45 minutes. When he finished, Mrs. Pickering proposed Schlossar for the position, which he was then offered.

As part of his role, he was asked to conduct weekly check-ins with Schlossar via text messages from his work phone. But Schlossar’s responses became increasingly frequent and inappropriate, and he asked Mrs Pickering on a date just a week after being placed in the position. He then moved to Leicester and turned up at his office with a ring.

“He said he had moved house to be closer to me and that he wanted to marry me,” she said. “She stared at me through the window for half an hour before bursting into the office and saying she needed to talk to me.”

Pickering’s colleagues called the police and Schlossar was arrested. But he continued to bombard Pickering with sexually explicit messages and videos of him pleasuring himself.

He posted videos on Instagram where he told Pickering he loved her and begged her to be with him and have his children. Schlossar was given a lifetime restraining order in June 2022, after admitting two counts of harassment, but two hours after her release. In September he contacted Ms Pickering again, leading to her arrest and remand.

Schlossar pleaded guilty to harassment and breaching a restraining order in November 2022 at Leicester Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to 12 weeks for breach and 23 weeks for harassment, concurrently.

But after his release, Schlossar continued to post videos online addressing Pickering and contacting her through Instagram. He was arrested again and sentenced to 30 months for breaching the restraining order in February.

“It’s been exhausting, I’m constantly on edge,” Mrs Pickering said. ‘I have never experienced something so horrible. I now realize that my life will never be the same.’

Detective Constable Josh Evans, of Leicestershire Police, said: “Jennifer has endured two horrific years of bullying and harassment from Schlossar, which has left her feeling extremely fearful at times.” Despite this, the bravery she has shown has been incredible and I hope that with Jennifer’s recent prison sentence she can start to feel safe and lead a normal life again.”
