First introduced in 1905, Cadbury sells more than 350 million chocolate bars each year and is now loved around the world.
But one Australian living in the UK took to TikTok to share a big difference she noticed between Cadbury’s bars in the UK and those Down Under.
Jess Chate, 21, filmed herself in the chocolate aisle of Sainsbury’s three days ago and her sweet reveal has racked up more than 2.9 million views on TikTok.
The Australian, who is an aspiring singer, points her phone’s camera at the stacks of Cadburys on the supermarket shelves and says: “I just wanted to draw attention to the fact that in the UK they make their chocolate in horizontal”.
That’s all it took to send TikTok users into a frenzy, starting a heated debate in the comments about the proper orientation of chocolate bars.
Jess Chate (pictured) posted a video on TikTok that now has over 2.9 million views.
One TikTok user said: ‘This baffles me. Portrait is the only way. Others claimed that eating British “landscape” style chocolate would make them feel like they were “eating a Wonka bar.”
Another Australian living in London commented: “I can’t believe I never realized this.” Someone said: “In South Africa it is also landscape.”
“The same thing happens in Germany,” added another.
Original creator Jess uploaded a follow-up video today explaining her new theory. Maybe landscape chocolate is a “European thing”?
“Good news, I’m in France,” he said as he examined the chocolate on display. ‘We have discovered that the chocolate here is, in fact, in portrait.
‘Crazy things. The small differences continue.”
While many users verified Jess’s theory, which stated that chocolate is sold in horizontal packaging in countries like Finland, others disagreed.
One commentator put a damper on the process, saying: “I remember going to Germany and discovering that the chocolate was square, neither horizontal nor vertical.”
Another wrote: “In Sweden, milk chocolate is a landscape and dark chocolate is a portrait.”
Femail has approached Cadbury for comment.

TikTok users took to the comments section to express their disbelief at their discovery, as well as what chocolate packaging is like in their own countries.

The landscape versus portrait chocolate fiasco continued on BBC Radio One.
Presenter Jamie Laing intervened in the debate and said: ‘I know exactly what she (Jess) means.
‘When you go to the sweets aisle in the supermarket or the news agents or whatever, chocolate in the UK gets pushed to the side. It’s long, it’s landscape.
But Laing, who founded the confectionery company Candy Kittens, came up with a completely new theory. “In reality, luxury chocolate in the UK is often a portrait,” he said. “Like a Lindt.”
