Mother of four furious over parents' 'selfish demands' during holidays

A mother-of-four is furious about her parents’ “selfish demands” during the holidays.

The woman said she yelled at her parents for the trip of a lifetime to Kauai in Hawaii, paying for her accommodation, flights and car rental to thank them for helping with her children.

But the young woman now regrets her decisions after being bombarded with complaints from the “ungrateful” couple.

‘I’ve been told quite a bit about how expensive their food is. Not a thank you, not even a thank you or a positive comment,” she wrote on a Facebook page “Am I the asshole?”

She shared a screenshot showing that one of her meals cost $104 (AUD$156).

“Stop complaining that you’re in paradise on a free vacation,” he wrote.

But his parents doubled down.

“Our CHEAPEST meal was US$40 (AU$60), most cost between US$60-80 (AU$90-120),” they responded.

The woman joked that she would send them somewhere much cheaper “like Arkansas” for their next trip, just to get some advice from her parents.

“A condo would be smarter, so we could cook some of our own meals,” they said.

The woman felt bad for being angry at her parents for their expectations, but others quickly validated her feelings.

“When something like this happens to me, I write: ‘You said ‘thank you’ wrong.” and leave it,” one woman wrote.

‘I literally can’t imagine receiving such a nice gift and doing nothing but complain. “If they were that concerned, you’d think they’d look up some stuff about the cost of food and stuff beforehand and politely decline if they didn’t want to spend that money,” wrote another.

'Hawaii is expensive. Even the purchases will surprise you

‘Hawaii is expensive. Even the purchases will surprise you,” said another.

‘My God… so there’s a hotel, I bet there’s a free breakfast. Or they could have bought things for the sandwiches. “How dare you send them to Hawaii on vacation,” said a third.

However, some were on the parents’ side.

‘Hawaii is expensive. Even the purchases will surprise you,” said another.

‘Did you ask them before you bought the holiday to make sure they could pay for food and anything else they wanted to do there?’ asked another.

A third criticized: “Hawaii is ridiculously expensive.” Your mom sent you a screenshot of a $100 meal and your response was: stop complaining that you’re on a free vacation. WITH.

‘How can it be a free vacation if they pay for their own food and their cheapest meal is $50 to $60 and this particular meal is $100?’ It sounds like they probably don’t eat out often, and certainly not in a very high cost area like Hawaii.

“It’s a nice gesture to send them somewhere to help you, but this may have created a hardship for them or at least caught them off guard at what this ‘free’ vacation was going to cost them.”
