As lockdown grows easier, our days indoors for a laptop with oversized hoodies and comfy track pants come to an end, and a return to the office looms – making many realize that our work clothes no longer fit.
It’s no wonder the pandemic has led to the phrase ‘Covid stone’ becoming part of our lexicon. A recent survey by Kings College and Ipsos MORI provided a surprising snapshot of the impact the coronavirus has had on the country’s lifestyle and emotions.
Of the 2,254 people surveyed, 48 percent said they had gained weight during lockdown, and the same percentage reported feeling depressed or anxious, while 29 percent said they drank more alcohol.
But is a drastically calorie-restricted diet or an exhausting fitness regimen really the answer to shifting those pounds? According to hypnotherapist Aaron Surtees, who runs City Hypnosis in London, the answer to weight loss lies in harnessing the power of our minds.

The celebrity expert, who has covered a string of stars including Ant McPartlin, Montana Brown and Charlie Brooker, said, “ Hypnosis is all about fundamental changes in mindset that change your relationship with food.
As a result, new healthy eating habits will naturally become ingrained unconsciously in the long run.
Weight loss is all due to the power of the mind, not fad diets. The techniques below will help you become happier and more confident, and eventually you will be able to eat whatever you want without feeling ashamed or feeling guilty.
‘Being slim is a state of mind. It’s the way you think and behave around food that makes a big difference. ‘
Here, Aaron shares with FEMAIL why the Covid pandemic has had such an impact on our diet and eating habits, and his five-step hypnosis program that he believes will help you lose excess weight and stay slim.
AARON’S FIVE STEP HYPNOSIS TECHNOLOGY
UNDERSTAND WHY YOU HAVE PUT WEIGHT
Before embarking on a weight-loss journey, it is important to understand why you have eaten too much. The main cause for many in the past year will have been the uncertainty caused by the Covid pandemic.
Emotional eating – eating when we’re not hungry but for comfort – usually stems from boredom, stress, upset, or a combination of all of these factors.
The rush of endorphins caused by comfort food helps protect and distract us from stress and makes us temporarily happier.
The problem is that it also sparks a vicious cycle of us feeling better temporarily, but worse in the long run as we add excess weight and feel worse about ourselves and our health.
1. Visualize the new you
The first step is to visualize the new you at your ideal weight and size within a few months.
This simple yet powerful exercise, which you should do every morning, will train your subconscious mind to help you lose weight permanently.
To help you determine the situation, sit or lie back in a comfortable place where you will not be distracted. It’s important to make sure you turn off your devices.
To help visualize, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Feel the weight of your body and imagine a reflection of yourself in a mirror in three months.
Pay attention to the clothes you wear in your visualization and how well they fit and feel on your slimmer body. This makes you feel good. See the confident smile of the new you.
2. Imagine an appetite dial
Using an appetite control mechanism in hypnosis is key to helping you reduce cravings. This means that customers are asked to imagine an appetite guide.
A great tip to help you visualize this is to close your eyes. Then take a deep breath and relax in a comfortable chair or snuggle up on a comfortable bed.
Imagine a ruler where 10 is ravaging hunger, and zero is no appetite at all. In the morning, afternoon and evening before eating, close your eyes as described above and see where your appetite is.
If it’s high and it’s almost 10, try to bring it down and see if it will come down. Try to cut it down to 3-4 on a consistent basis.
This will reduce your appetite to give your body only what it physiologically needs. Clients naturally consume less food to satisfy their hunger using this dial system as the appetite dials can be rotated using the above technique so that the client only eats when physiologically hungry and stops once that hunger is satisfied.
This works on a mental and emotional level rather than a physical level to control appetite and not overeat.
Think of food as fuel
Hypnosis will help you see food as fuel. Clients learn the difference between true physical hunger and comfort eating, which means eating for the sake of food and is driven by our emotions.
Physical hunger builds up gradually over a number of hours, while emotional hunger is often sudden and is related to feelings of boredom, stress, or upset that will prompt you to go to the refrigerator.
Aaron Surtees has covered a range of stars including Ant McPartlin, Montana Brown and Charlie Brooker and is considered the UK’s most recommended hypnotherapist.
Hypnosis will encourage clients to listen to their bodies so they can spot the signs of genuine hunger.
Achieve this by following the technique of eye closure and comfort position so that that habit becomes part of your daily routine. If you can’t practice every morning because of your work, just switch to the evening.
Remind yourself that food is also for enjoyment by repeating, ‘I don’t lose seeing food as fuel, I can enjoy food just as much as before because I eat just enough to fuel my body. I enjoy never feeling too full or guilty. ‘

4. Embrace conscious eating
Mindfulness around eating, becoming aware of what you eat and why you chew is crucial to change your attitude and help you lose weight.
Hypnosis teaches you to focus on your food and nothing else while you are eating. Clients are encouraged to slow down the speed at which they eat and to chew every bite well.
This changes the dining experience; you no longer eat wolf food, but take the time to enjoy it, experience it and crucially hear a signal from your brain that tells you when you are full.
5. Create an aversion to sugary foods
An aversion to overly sugary food and drink becomes the new norm when hypnotized. Hypnotic suggestions create a feeling of nausea when consumed in excess, creating a satisfaction to prevent and eliminate obvious addictions.
To accomplish this through hypnosis, use the technique of sitting and closed eyes taking deep breaths. Then imagine eating a piece of chocolate or a cookie or some other sweet treat.
Then imagine it tastes 10 times sweeter and sicker than ever before; Imagine the sugar clinging to your insides and the sickly sweetness spinning your head, like a particularly unpleasant hangover.
You’ll want to banish sweet things quickly and find it hard to imagine how you used to eat so much back in the day. Instead, you prefer to get natural sugar from fruit.
