Hyde Park stabbing: Man charged with allegedly stabbing police officer in the head in Sydney’s CBD

The man (pictured) was arrested shortly after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in the back of the head with a 30cm kitchen knife.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with allegedly stabbing a police officer in the head with a 30cm kitchen knife in Sydney’s CBD.

Constable Elvis Poa, 35, and another officer from Kings Cross Police Area Command were carrying out traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park streets, near Hyde Park, when he was allegedly stabbed by the man shortly after from 1:00 pm on Sunday.

The man approached Agent Poa from behind and allegedly stabbed him up to three times in the head with a 30 cm weapon.

Constable Poa suffered several skull fractures and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains in a stable condition.

Footage filmed by shocked witnesses showed several officers, including the wounded police officer, chasing the alleged attacker into the park and confronting him.

The man brandishing the kitchen knife allegedly demanded police shoot him.

The officer and his colleague were heard shouting several times for the man to drop the gun as they approached before one used a Taser to subdue the man.

The man was arrested on the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

After being released from hospital, he was taken to Day Street police station and charged with causing wounding and grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder.
