A boy with Down syndrome and autism may have mistakenly believed he was trapped in a medical center fire escape when he went missing for more than two days.

Hussein Al Mansoory, 12, was reported missing after he was seen running from Auburn Memorial Park in western Sydney towards a busy intersection about 10.30am on Saturday.

An extensive search included police helicopters and hundreds of SES volunteers scouring backyards in the area.

About 12.40pm on Monday, a staff member at City West Medical Center found Hussein hiding under a stairwell – just 150m from the Auburn police station, which led the search.

Inspector Simon Glasser said Hussein was smiling when he was found and appeared to be doing well.

Tuesday morning held Sept. Appearing on the Seven Network’s Sunrise programme, Glasser said Hussein probably walked into the stairwell of the medical center thinking the door was locked when it closed behind him.

“It’s quite likely that he simply walked down the driveway to the medical center and then entered the medical center and then entered the stairwell from the bottom,” he said.

‘Being young and having special needs, he didn’t realize the door was unlocked behind him and he must have thought he was trapped inside.’

Supt. Glasser also said Hussein’s favorite song, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, was played loudly in the streets during the search.

“He’s known to run from people when he’s gone missing and he’s gone missing before so it was a tactic to try and make him feel safe and hopefully lure him out of hiding,” he said.

When he was found on Monday, Hussein’s parents were ecstatic when their son was found and ran to the scene.

His cousin cried with joy and said, ‘He’s all right, he’s all right.’

Hussein had last been seen wearing only a t-shirt and diaper, and he was also barefoot.

It is unclear how long the boy had been in the hallway and whether he had access to food or water.

CCTV had captured Hussein at Auburn station on Saturday, the day he disappeared, but police confirmed he did not board a train.

He said Hussein’s family had been “quite distraught”. The child was known to run away but was usually found quickly.

“The footage of him in his shirt and diaper shows how vulnerable he is,” Supt. Glasser said.

He was released from the hospital on Monday evening.
