A lovelorn Brit was caught trying to cross the Polish border into Russia while reportedly trying to contact a woman he met online.

Polish Border Guard branded the 37-year-old British national a “stubborn Englishman” after he arrived at the border in his BMW but without visa or vehicle documents demanding to be allowed to enter Russia.

He told guards that he had to cross the border at Grzechotki in northern Poland to meet his fiancée 700 miles away in St. Petersburg.

After being turned away, he was captured on CCTV footage trying to get there on foot along woodland roads, but his journey was cut short when he was stopped.

The man claimed his navigator took him in the wrong direction, but the Polish border force said he “wanted to get to Russia”.

Polish border guards said in an online statement that the Englishman was “stubborn”, adding: “Officers from the border guard station in Grzechotki detained an Englishman who entered the border road.”

‘The man wanted to get to Russia. The reason for his trip was a girl he met on the Internet.

They added: ‘At the Grzechotki border crossing on 23 February at 2am, a British citizen presented himself at border customs as he was leaving Poland.

«The man did not have a visa for Russia nor a circulation permit. He stated that he wanted to go to St. Petersburg to visit his fiancée, whom he met online.

‘Border Guard agents informed the traveler that he could not cross the border because he did not have the required documents.

‘A few hours later, the 37-year-old man drove his BMW to the Polish-Russian border area, the so-called green border. Around 5:30 in the morning, Border Guard cameras recorded a man entering the border highway.

‘The detained Englishman explained to the Border Guard agents that the navigation had directed him wrong.

“He also admitted that he wanted to see the girl he met online so much that he decided to go to Lithuania and from there to Russia.”

After fining him £120, guards released the Briton, who told them he will now try to enter Russia through Lithuania.
