Emergency rescue teams have contained a chemical spill at a high school that caused unrest among students and teachers.

Twenty-eight people were tested and monitored after a 600 milliliter bottle of benzyl chloride leaked at a scientific laboratory in Hurstville, Sydney, on Wednesday.

The chemical is sometimes used to make dyes and also pharmaceuticals and it is understood the bottle was being removed for disposal.

It is understood the chemical was in the process of being moved for disposal.
