Hundreds evacuated after stolen car crashed into block of flats in Merrylands, Sydney

A suspected stolen car crashed into an apartment block before bursting into flames, forcing more than 250 residents to be evacuated in the middle of the night.

The Toyota RAV4 crashed into the ground floor of the building in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, at about 2.45am on Thursday.

The vehicle subsequently caught fire and emergency services were called to the scene.

Firefighters fought the blaze and managed to extinguish the fire without causing any damage to the building.

Residents living in the apartment complex were awakened by a fire alarm and had to remain outside the building until the flames were extinguished.

The car crashed into the building in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, at about 2.45am on Thursday before bursting into flames.

They have since been able to return home and no injuries have been reported.

New South Wales Police are investigating the incident and are treating the fire as suspicious, while the driver of the Toyota remains at large.

The car is believed to have been stolen in Moorebank, about 30 minutes south of Merrylands, last Sunday.
