ALISON BOSHOFF: Hugh Jackman Reveals He Damaged His Vocal Range From All The Growls He Did While Filming Wolverine

Hugh Jackman is a song and dance man, as well as an action hero – just watch his appearances in Les Mis and The Greatest Showman if you’re in doubt.

But he says playing Marvel’s Wolverine has affected his vocal range.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row: ‘My drama school teacher would have been shocked by some of the things I did in Wolverine.

“I damaged my voice playing Wolverine.

“My falsetto isn’t as strong as it used to be, and I attribute that directly to the growling and screaming I used to do.”

Oh no! Hugh Jackman is a song and dance man, as well as an action hero, but he says playing Marvel’s Wolverine has affected his vocal range

It comes after Hugh denied longstanding rumors that he was taking steroids to bulk up for his role as the X-Men character.

The Australian actor, who featured on HBO’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, described being jacked the “old fashioned way” for his famous role, before hinting that he avoided steroids because one of their side effects is erectile dysfunction.

‘No, I like my job. And I love Wolverine,” Jackman, 54, replied when Wallace asked if he’d made “juice” for the role.

“I have to be careful what I say here, but I’ve been told anecdotally what the side effects of that are. And I was like, “I don’t like it that much.” So no, I just did it the old fashioned way,’ he chuckled.

The Greatest Showman star then made a few jokes about the high-protein diet he used to build muscle for each of his nine Wolverine movies.

‘I’ve eaten more chicken – I’m so sorry to all the vegans and vegetarians and to the chickens of the world… Literally the karma is not good for me. If the deity has anything to do with chickens, I’m in trouble,” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, he described the tough training regimen he’ll be following to play Wolverine in Ryan Reynold’s upcoming superhero movie Deadpool 3.

Jackman, who last put on his claws in 2017’s Logan, told Wallace, “I don’t do any other work. I’m going to be with my family and train. That will be my job for six months.’

He confessed,

He also credited his current starring role in The Music Man on Broadway with helping him stay in shape.

“And I’m really fit now,” said Jackman. “There’s one thing about singing and dancing on Broadway about eight shows a week is that I’m fit. So I am healthy. I’ve got a good place to start.”

“I learned you can’t rush it,” he added. “I’ve learned it takes time.”

Deadpool 3 is scheduled for September 2024.
