The UEFA Champions League returns this week with several changes to its schedule, including the addition of 36 teams (instead of the 32 in the past) and the elimination of the group stage in favor of the new league system. In the league system, sometimes called the Swiss system, the 36 participating teams will be divided into four groups of nine and play two teams from each group. At the end of the eight matches, the top eight teams will advance to the round of 16, while the ninth- to 24th-placed teams will advance to a playoff round. Reigning champions Real Madrid will play their first game of the season on Tuesday against Stuttgart, just one of many matches that will kick off the new UEFA Champions League season.
