How to Treat Diabetes With Blood Sugar Supplements?

Diabetes is one of the leading health complications in the United States. Approximately 34.2 million people of all ages, or 10.5% of the US population, had diabetes, says the National Diabetes Statistics Report, a periodic publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Type 2 Diabetes, also called adult-onset diabetes, is becoming more common among children, which occurs when the body either resists or doesn’t produce enough insulin. It results in an imbalance of blood glucose level.

Many people are trying to manage blood sugar level with regular physical exercise and complete course of the medication. Some of the most common medications for the treatment of blood sugar are as follows:-

  • insulin therapy
  • metformin (Glucophage, Glumetza, others)
  • sulfonylureas
  • meglitinides

However, in case these medications will not work even after regular exercise and medications, the doctor may prescribe you the best drug that will suit you.

Do Blood Sugar Supplements Work?

The main motive behind eating food is to provide your body with the necessary vitamins and minerals. But alternatively, many people are shifting their choices of fulfilling their nutritional demand from supplements rather than food items.

Depending on the patient’s severity, the doctor may alter the dose of the diabetes medication, but in some cases, the supplements may not replace medication entirely. Its very difficult to say about the effectiveness of the supplements without knowing about the patient condition. Therefore, blood sugar supplements do work, depending upon the severity of the patient.

Below are some of the list of supplements that show promise as a diabetes treatment.

Best Supplements To Lower Blood Sugar

According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are more likely to depend on supplements than non-diabetic people. Supplements should not replace your standard diabetic treatment. Doing this can increase the risk of health complications.

Make sure you discuss about taking supplements with the doctor as the product may interfere in the treatment. Just because the supplements are natural does not mean they will not cause any harm to your body.

There are multiple supplements useful in the treatment of diabetes, such as:-

Cinnamon: Cinnamon supplements are made out of either the whole cinnamon powder or an extract. Many studies, such as a study in 2011, suggest the supplements help lower blood sugar and improve diabetes control. Yet, more studies are being done on Cinnamon, but the supplement is found beneficial for the treatment of diabetes treatment.

Chromium:  It is an essential trace element used in the metabolism of carbohydrates. But the research on the use of chromium for diabetes treatment is mixed. It is because low doses are considered safe for most people with the risk that chromium may lower the blood sugar level too low and may cause kidney damage.

Vitamin B-1:  It is also known as thiamine. People with diabetes are found with thiamine deficient that leads to some of the diabetes complications, such as heart disease and blood vessel damage.

Thiamine is a water-soluble substance, without enough water, it becomes difficult for it to get absorbed by the cells where needed. However, benfotiamine, a supplement form of thiamine, is a lipid-soluble that makes it easier for it to penetrate cell membranes. Some researchers show it may help in preventing diabetic complications.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid: It is a potent antioxidant that helps in the following:-

  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Lower fasting blood sugar level
  • Decreases insulin resistance

Bitter Melon: In countries like Asia, South America, and others use bitter melon to cure diabetes-related conditions. There is enough data about its effectiveness in treating diabetes in animals and lab studies.

On the other hand, there is not enough data about the effectiveness of bitter melon for treating diabetes in humans.

Green Tea: Everybody knows green tea works as an antioxidant. It is because of polyphenols, but the main antioxidant in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). As per the laboratory reports, EGCG has numerous health benefits, such as:-

  • Low risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Prevents type 2 diabetes
  • Improves glucose control
  • Better insulin activity

But studies on diabetic patients have not shown health benefits. However, green tea is considered safe. Know about Generic Medicines in USA

Resveratrol: It is a chemical present in wine and grapes, a din animal model, it was found beneficial in preventing blood sugar. As per some animal studies, the chemical was found helpful in reducing oxidative stress. However, human data is limited, and it is too soon to know if the supplements will be beneficial for diabetes.

Magnesium: It is an essential nutrient that helps in regulating blood pressure and insulin sensitivity. Supplements containing magnesium may help in improving insulin sensitivity in a diabetic patient.

Researchers have found a correlation between higher magnesium intake with a lower rate of insulin resistance and diabetes. Therefore, a high intake of magnesium in a diet may also reduce the risk of diabetes.
