Microsoft named their programme Recycle Tanks because it can quickly recover non-empty files. We often mistakenly delete files or change our minds about deleting directories. The instructions in this manual apply to various operating systems such as Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP, which use the recycle tank feature.
How To Recover Deleted Files From The Trash
Here are the step-by-step steps to recover deleted files from the junk:
·To open the recyclable tank, just double-click or press its icon on your desktop.
·Find and select the files and/or folders you want to recover. You can select multiple listings by pressing Ctrl or selecting ranges using Shift. Please note that the Recycle Box does not show the files that are in the deleted folder. If you can’t find a file that you know you delete, it may be in a delete folder. The recovery folder will revive all the file contents that are there.
·If a file has been deleted from the recycling tank, Windows will not have an in-built way to recover it. However, you can use a file recovery program to cancel deletion. You can refer to our comprehensive tutorial for detailed tips on how to restore delete files.
·Save the original location of the file you are recovering. If you are viewing the recycle tank in the “Details” view, you can switch to this view from the view menu.
·Right-click or click on the option and select Restore option. Or you can drag the option out of the recycle tank window and place it in the folder of your choice. This will bring the file back to its original position. If you use the recovery option without dragging the file out, it will be sent back to the original location. The recovered file will not automatically return to the same folder unless it is deleted from a specific location.
·The recycling tank will start the recovery process, which may take a long time depending on the number and size of files being recovered, as well as the speed of your computer.
·After the recovery process is complete, make sure the files and folders are in the expected location specified in step 3 or where you dragged them to step 5. If everything looks good, you can close the recycling tank.
How to Restore a Specific File From a Deleted Folder

Most people can recover folders without knowing their contents, but the Command Prompt gives you the option to see what you’re deleting or to restore specific file values.
·Start Command Prompt by opening the WIN+R dialog and typing “cmd”. Click Enter to run the command. You should see “Cd” as “C:>” in the printing area. Click Enter after each of the following commands: “CD $Recycle.Bin”. If an error occurs, try “cd Recycled” or “CD Recycler” because the commands may vary between different versions of Windows.
·Print and enter “dir/s” in the Command Prompt. This will show all deleted files, including recyclable tank folders with their original name. Scroll through the list until you find a section containing files that you believe are in the folder you want to recover. The name of the folder and the line “directory of” will appear on this section. To run between recycled tank folder, type “cd”. Create a space and press the tab. Find a folder that matches the directory you specified in step 5.
·When you find a folder containing the follower you want to access, press the Enter button, type “cd”, create a space, and use the tab again to select the folder with the deleted files you wish to view. Press Enter.
·Type “dir” and press Enter. This will show the deleted files inside the delete folders.
·To copy deleted files from the removed folder to the folder you want. Use the following command: “Copy [file name]bmp [route to destination folder]”. For example, to copy a BMP file into a folder on your desktop, you use the command “copy “New Bitmap Image – Copy (2).bmp C:\Users\roblef\Desktop”.
·Click Enter to run the command. The text “<#> Copy File(s)” indicates that it has been completed.
·Repeat steps 11 and 12 if you want to recover additional files from the same folder.
How To Display Or ‘Unhide’ A Recyclable Tank Program/Icon
Now let’s see how you can show or “hide” a recyclable tank program/icon:
If you do not see any icons on your desktop, you need to enable these icons. Right-click on the desktop, select “Show” and then select “Display Desktop Icons”.
For Windows 11 and Windows 10:
Open the Desktop Icon Settings by going to Options > Configure > Themes > Desktop icon Settings. Select the Recycle Bag Checkbox, then click OK. You can also access these settings by right clicking on the Start button.
For Windows 8:
Open the control panel and find the option “Show or hide common icons on your desktop”. Select the link, select the box for the recyclable tank and click OK.
For Windows 7 and Vista:
Right-click anywhere on your desktop and select “Personalize” in the left bar. Click on “Change Desktop Icons”. Select the address box behind the Recycle Tank, and click OK.
For Windows XP:
Please note that Windows XP still has no built-in option to hide a recyclable bag. However, you can use a program called Tweak UI to hid or hide it.
Or if you don’t want a recyclable tank icon on your desktop, you can access it by searching for “recycle tanks” using Cortana (Windows 10) or the search bar. (other Windows versions). Another way is to call the “start shell:RecycleBinFolder” command from the Command Prompt or “shell:recyclebinFolde” from the run dialog. However, these methods are not necessary. In some versions of Windows, the “desk.cpl.5” command works as well.
Recover Deleted Files From The Trash Using Third-party Software
In case you want to recover deleted files from junk using third-party software, Microsoft offers a powerful WinfrGUI, a free data recovery tool. It has an easy-to-use interface which makes the recovery process easier for non-technical users. To use WinfrGUI:
·Start the software and select where the deleted file is originally.
·Use the WinfrGUI interface to find and select deleted files
·View pre-recoverable files and select the files you want to recover.
·Select the destination you want to save the restored file.
·Start the recovery process and wait for it to be completed.
·After the recovery is complete, make sure that the recovered file is in the correct position.

How to Stop Windows From Instantly Deleting Files
If you find that Windows is deleting files immediately without any confirmation, it is possible that your computer is set to delete files automatically. To change this setting, right-click or click and place the Recycle Bin icon. Select “Properties” and make sure that the “Show Delete Verification Confirmation” option is an option. If files are still deleted immediately even if confirmation is enabled, please check the storage settings specified above. Enabling the “Don’t Move Files to Storage Bins” option means that files are permanently removed without going to the Trash Bins. While this prevents the creation of empty disk space, it also means that you will not be able to recover files after they are removed. Furthermore, make sure the default resize settings for recycle bins are not too small because Windows will delete the files if there is no emptying space.
