- But the hoax was confirmed 20 minutes later by Kerr and the Blues.
Sam Kerr left Chelsea fans fearing the worst after posting a fake exit announcement moments before clarifying that he will stay at the club.
Kerr, 30, signed a two-year contract extension with the Blues on Thursday in a big boost for the Matildas captain, who has struggled this season with injury problems and a tough court experience.
There were doubts over his future in west London, with his previous contract due to expire this summer, and Kerr leaned into that with a misleading advert, taking inspiration from Jurgen Klopp’s explosive interview about his departure from Liverpool earlier this year.
“The things that will stick with me the most will be the memories shared with the fans and my teammates,” he said in the video that had fans going wild.
But just 20 minutes later, Chelsea confirmed that the video was a hoax and that Kerr was going nowhere.
Daily Mail Australia understands the idea for the ad’s major twist was Kerr’s.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have temporarily renamed Stamford Bridge and the Kingsmeadow training ground to ‘Samford Bridge’ and ‘Kerrsmeadow’ respectively to celebrate the news.
Unsurprisingly, Blues fans were devastated by the initial announcement and took to Twitter, now known as X, to express their disbelief.
“I honestly don’t get it,” said one fan account.
Another added: ‘Jesus what the fuck?1!! You’re crazy!!!’
A more thoughtful fan said: ‘Another one missing… thanks for the memories Sam. All the best.’
After the U-turn was confirmed, fans weren’t too happy about their stress levels skyrocketing during that brief 20-minute period.
“Don’t ever try that again in your life,” one fan said.
“I don’t even know what to say, but please don’t leave us confused like this again,” said the same fan account that revealed “I don’t understand” earlier.
A third fan said: “Never do that again please.” All the rivals celebrating his departure haha I bet they’re not laughing now.
Kerr has had a difficult time off the field and has pleaded not guilty to a charge of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer stemming from an alleged incident in Twickenham, south-west London, on January 30, 2023.
She suffered another setback when her defense team’s efforts to have the charge dismissed failed, leaving her facing a four-day trial in February next year.
