After months of the public demanding an explanation and speculating about her whereabouts, the Princess of Wales shocked the world on Friday when she appeared on our television screens and told us candidly about her cancer diagnosis.
Throughout all of this, Prince William has masked his personal pain and put on a brave face during royal duties.
In February, he spoke to Holocaust survivor Renee Salt at the Western Marble Arch synagogue in central London, where he participated in discussions about the rise of anti-Semitism in Britain.
It was his first public appearance after leaving the memorial service for his godfather, the late King Constantine II of Greece, when he reportedly learned of his wife’s diagnosis.
Then, just three days before Kate’s emotional video announcement, William attended a conference to help end homelessness at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield.

Karen Pollock, executive director of the Holocaust Educational Trust, gave William a bouquet of flowers for Kate while they were with Rabbi Daniel Epstein.
During his visit to the Western Marble Arch Synagogue, William was seen holding Mrs Salt’s hand, as the 95-year-old woman told him: “I’m sorry, I’m sure if your wife had been well, she would have been here. I miss her a lot. Give her my best wishes please.
She spoke of her experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, prompting William to ask, “How did you manage?”
She replied: ‘It wasn’t easy. Somehow I survived.’ William held her hand as she described how her family has been affected by the rise in antisemitism in recent months.
William told him: “I’m so sorry we’ve come to this point, everything will get better.”
He added: “We were going to get closer to Holocaust Memorial Day, but unfortunately we had to move it, but I’m glad we can meet today.”

Returning to duty for the first time following his wife’s abdominal surgery and his father’s cancer diagnosis, the Prince of Wales hosted a gala dinner for the Air Ambulance service and gave a speech.
When Kate Josephs, chief executive of Sheffield City Council, raised the topic of childhood, William immediately commented on the success of Kate’s early years projects.
Spreading his palms and smiling, he said, ‘Venturing here in my wife’s territory. She needs to be sitting here to hear this.
The sweet comment was touching at the time, but even more so now that we know why Kate couldn’t attend.

Despite everything that happened in his personal life, he managed to make a joke and said: “I would like to take this opportunity to also thank Catherine and my father for the kind messages of support, especially in recent days. “It means a lot to all of us.
‘It’s fair to say that the last few weeks have had a rather “medical” focus. So I thought I’d come to an air ambulance show to get away from it all!’
