A flight attendant has revealed how long-haul flights prompted her to change her makeup techniques.
The poster, ‘Kathernemay’, read: ‘I used to work long distance and the main thing I would say that was different to my normal makeup routine was that I used powder, especially around the eyes, to keep the eyeliner on all day . time.
‘I used to use Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner (I found it lasted better) and then used a liquid one to fill in any faded edges.
‘Then, to refresh the makeup, I used a facial mist every hour or so to prevent the makeup from looking cakey.
“For my lipstick I would use Fenty liquid lipstick which literally stays on the entire flight, even after eating and drinking.”

Emirates (file image) is offering flight attendants living in Dubai access to its ‘beauty centre’, with a fleet of makeup, skincare and hair experts.
‘I was more concerned about the health of my skin, so I was constantly slathering my face with layers of occlusive moisturizer.
“At the end of the day, no makeup will look good after 16 hours in a desert air tube sucking moisture out of every pore.”
Flight attendant ‘Viskel43der’ advised: “Bring a small amount of hairspray or gel and a spoolie (a mascara applicator without product) to tame flyaway hairs.”
Next, another crew member admitted that not everything was as it seems.

The poster added: ‘You know those big water bottles on many flights? A lot of flight crew try to drink at least one or two of them a day and take the leftover bottles with them for the layover.’
They continued: ‘Many flight attendants will take advantage of downtime on the plane or between flights to touch up their makeup. It is not something that happens all at once, but continues throughout the day.”
Additionally, they noted that cabin crew can get hold of beauty items that are out of reach for most people.
The crew member added that “they can fly to other countries to obtain products and procedures that would otherwise be inaccessible or unaffordable.”
Some airlines have strict requirements that cabin crew must adhere to when applying makeup and hair, which may be part of the reason why flight attendants are often so well-groomed.
British Airways cabin crew rules state: “Women must have a stylish appearance, with hair and make-up that is appropriate in a professional environment and complements our uniform.”
Emirates even offers flight attendants living in Dubai access to its “beauty center,” where they can see an “in-house team of consultants… to learn about makeup application, nutrition, fitness, skin care and hair care tips”.
United Airlines rules indicate: ‘Apply makeup conservatively for a natural look and in shades that are compatible with individual skin tones.
The rules stipulate that “extreme colors are not appropriate and may not be used.”
Some airlines have chosen to update these requirements, such as Virgin Atlantic, which has eradicated its mandatory makeup rule. But almost all cabin crew must meet certain job standards when it comes to their appearance.
