HOT OR NOT: Jermain Defoe still has it, but Italy is getting worse

HOT OR NOT: Rangers striker Jermain Defoe still knows where the goal is … but the Italian rugby team is getting worse rather than better

  • Jermain Defoe scored three times in four league games for Rangers
  • American ski star Lindsey Vonn is retiring this weekend
  • Wales rests 10 players against Italy, which is getting worse in the Six Nations

It’s Hot or Not time again, as Sportsmail’s Ian Ladyman reveals what made him hot and what made him cold this week.

HOT

Jermain Defoe

The 36-year-old is back with Rangers’ goals and his strike at Aberdeen was emphatic.

But it only took Defoe four league matches to score three goals in Scotland, just one less than he managed to achieve in 34 games for Bournemouth.

That tells us about standards north of the border.

Goodison TV blackout

Many of those who complain that the Manchester City game in Everton were not on TV will soon tell us that people should care more about the FA Cup.

Well, they can’t have it both ways.

This week was reserved for reruns of the FA Cup, which is why it was entirely right that a rogue Premier League game was asked to sit in the back seat.

Lindsey Vonn

We may have questioned Vonn’s taste in men, but never her talent.

Tiger Woods’ ex is retiring this weekend and has suffered almost as many injuries as titles she has won.

With 83 World Cup wins and three Olympic gold awards to her name, few have skied with such majestic, powerful courage.

But you do wonder if Vonn is really gone for good at the age of 34.

Alisson Becker

The Brazilian has improved Liverpool, but his standards have not been high lately.

Those wondering if he really should have been defeated by Mikhail Antonio’s shot at West Ham (a dive might have helped) may be interested to know that of the 11 targets he has had in the Premier League since January 1, seven went in.

Jose Mourinho

Since Mourinho was fired by Manchester United, TV expert appearances in Qatar have been followed by a guest game at a Russian ice hockey game, where he fell while playing the starter role.

Mourinho looked in a state when he crashed to earth, but if there’s a more troubling face than a grown man lying flat on the ice, it’s that of a guy who doesn’t seem to have the capacity to just stay home for a while.

Italy

The Six Nations is very competitive, except when it is time to play Italy.

Then it just becomes a nice excuse for a weekend in Rome.

On Saturday, Wales will equip 10 players against the Azzurri, a team that has won one of 26 games since the start of the 2014 tournament.

They get worse rather than better.
