Dearborn Sausage Company accidentally swapped the labels on two products, meaning both contained elements that were not declared on the label. One contained soy, which is an allergen, and the other contained pork, which people of certain religions cannot eat.

Nearly 2,000 pounds of Vienna sausages have been recalled because they contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the labels.

The alert relates to two products manufactured by Dearborn Sausage Company of Michigan, shown on the labels below.

The labels on the two slightly different lines of sausages were inadvertently swapped during a production run on August 7.

This meant that both contained items that were not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said Thursday.

One contained soy, which is an allergen. The other contained pork, which people of certain religions cannot eat.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 10002” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These items, which come in 2-pound packages containing ten sausages, were shipped to retail locations in Ohio.

The problem was discovered when Dearborn received a complaint from a retailer who had found that products they had received might have been incorrectly labeled.

Dearborn staff discovered that they inadvertently mislabeled beef sausage products as both beef and pork sausage products, and vice versa.

The following products are subject to recall:

2-pound vacuum-sealed packages of “BROOKSIDE BRAND FULLY COOKED NATURAL CASING BEEF WIENERS” may contain undeclared pork with lot code A0122024 and sell-by date 11/05/2024

2 lb vacuum sealed packages of “BROOKSIDE BRAND NATURAL CASING FULLY COOKED WIENERS” may contain undeclared soy with lot code A0322024 and best before date 11/05/2024

To date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be found in the refrigerators or freezers of consumers and retailers.

Anyone who has purchased affected sausages should not eat them, but should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

Consumers and members of the media with questions about the recall can contact Chase McQuiston, FSQA Manager, Dearborn Sausage Company, Inc. at 313-842-2375, ext. 3052.
