A man was stabbed to death on a busy street outside a popular restaurant.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Marrickville Road in Marrickville, in Sydney’s central west, at about 7.40pm on Monday following reports of a stabbing.

Police and paramedics performed CPR on the injured man outside a Guzman Y Gomez restaurant, but he could not be revived and died at the scene.

The incident sparked emotional scenes as those who knew the dead man wanted to see him and had to be restrained by officers, and one of the men was attacked with a Taser by police.

Several other men were escorted away after a heated argument and the area was cordoned off.

Karen, an overseas visitor who was in the area just after the alleged stabbing, said she found the incident “sad” and had always felt safe in Australia.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect this kind of thing to happen in this country,” she said.

“It makes me feel sad and also sad for that boy.”

Locals also expressed their shock online at such a horrific crime occurring in their neighbourhood.

NSW Police have no further information at this time. No arrests have been made.

Authorities are appealing for anyone with information or who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage to come forward.
