Ten-month-old Baby Waylon from Newton County, Missouri has finally returned home after fighting for his life for more than a month in the hospital, but returns with serious and long-lasting injuries.
Waylon was admitted to the hospital last September after his mother’s boyfriend allegedly threw him in the air, dropped him, and then hugged him tightly until he stopped crying.
Medical staff at Children’s Mercy told Newton County detectives that the boy had an “abuse traumatic brain injury” in addition to other injuries.
The baby was found to be aspirating and unable to breathe in his sleep, and was placed on a ventilator upon arrival at the hospital, where he later suffered from brain swelling and multiple seizures.
Waylon’s devastating injuries occurred after a baby jumper was placed on him while his mother ran to the bathroom last September.
He was allegedly pulled out and thrown into the air by Boggess, who failed to catch the boy on the second throw due to claims of “sweaty hands”, resulting in his catastrophic fall to the ground.
“I was only in the bathroom for a minute at most, and Jordan came in screaming with Waylon on her arm,” said Bessie Burbridge, the boy’s mother. fox 5. “He was completely limp and not breathing.”
Burbridge said her boyfriend confessed that “Waylon fell to the ground and that made him scream more, so she held him until he stopped crying.”
Jordan Boggess, 28, the boyfriend of Waylon’s mother, is now behind bars for child abuse and is expected to appear in court in December.
Waylon’s mother, Bessie Burbridge, now has a restraining order against Boggess and noted that she has known him for about four years, never expect him to do something like this.
“I’ve known Jordan for about four years,” he added. “I never thought I could do something like this.”
But doctors and investigators in the case believe Waylon may have suffered shaken baby syndrome, which can cause serious brain damage, Fox 5 reported.
“He basically took my son’s life,” Waylon’s father told KY3. ‘He took my son’s future. You don’t just throw a baby into the air.
The family was informed that Waylon had no brain activity during his first few days in the hospital, but began to show slight improvements by opening his eyes and shaking his arm.
The baby’s cousin, Jaden Branham, said: “It’s very heartbreaking to walk in and see a child literally having to fight for his life.”
“These are children and they deserve to live a normal, carefree life, without having to worry about being afraid of who they are with,” he added. And unfortunately it was not like that. He couldn’t do that.’
Christa Newman, the baby’s grandmother, said WBTV: ‘They said baby Waylon won’t be the same baby. If he succeeds, he will be in a wheelchair. You won’t be able to speak. He won’t be able to feed himself.’
Waylon will now suffer severe injuries to the brain and other areas, limited vision, seizures and muscle stiffness for the unforeseeable future.
Waylon’s father said: ‘As far as we know, he can’t see. He can’t sit down. He can barely lift his head.
Doctors and investigators in the case believe Waylon may have also suffered from shaken baby syndrome.
But throughout his long stay in the hospital, Waylon beat the odds and recovered more than doctors had previously predicted.
“It’s definitely been an emotional roller coaster,” Burbridge told Fox 5. “He’s been proving them wrong every step of the way.”
Burbridge made a statement after his son’s release, which read: “Waylon was released from the hospital on October 24 and went home with his mother. Our main focus is on him and Waylon recovering and doing his best.” to get stronger,” KY3 reported.
Waylon’s mother also noted that he has since been able to regain his mobility, Fox 5 reported.
Despite being well enough to leave the hospital, baby Waylon has a long road of suffering ahead of him: severe injuries to the brain and other areas, limited vision, seizures and muscle stiffness.
Now he has the great possibility of dedicating his entire life to physiotherapy.
Waylon’s father told KY3: ‘He basically took my son’s life. He took my son’s future away. You don’t just throw a baby into the air.
Waylon still cannot speak and may spend the rest of his life in physical therapy to recover from his traumatic injuries.
Burbridge has since filed a restraining order against Boggess, who is now behind bars on child abuse charges.
The boy’s family, including his father, stayed with him throughout his care and organized a fundraiser in GoFundMe.com to help his father gain sole custody of Waylon.
Other GoFundMe A page has been created in support of Waylon’s mother.
Waylon’s family members continue to support their loved one as they try to raise awareness about child abuse.
‘My son, he can’t even speak for himself. Not only me, but my family and everyone who fights for him, we are his voice,” Burbridge told KY3.
Boggess will appear in Newton County Court on December 13.
