An elderly man died after another patient allegedly beat him to death with a cane in a Queensland hospital ward, detectives say.

Police launched an investigation after the 84-year-old victim was allegedly attacked by another patient in his 70s on March 24.

The elderly man is believed to have been attacked while sleeping in a hospital bed in a ward shared with his attacker at Hervey Bay Hospital, 300 kilometers north of Brisbane.

He died two days later from his injuries, on March 26.
