A man died after falling 20 meters into the water from the top of a popular cliff in a horror incident.

Emergency services were called to a picnic area on Duckholes Trail, in Terrey Hills, about 30 kilometers north of Sydney, about 12.30pm on Friday.

Police pulled the body of the man, believed to be in his 40s, from the water.

He has not yet been identified.

A crime has been created and investigations into the incident have begun.

A New South Wales police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the incident was a misadventure.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told the Daily Mail that several ambulance crews, including critical care paramedics, attended the scene.

The spokesman declined to comment further.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
