A 23-year-old man stabbed to death alongside his father at a children’s birthday party has been remembered as a “true gentleman” with a “heart of gold”.

Karl Gruber-Terrick and his father, Karl Gruber, 54, were killed at a toddler’s birthday party in Clyde North, southeast of Melbourne, on Thursday night.

About 20 people had gathered for the party when a fight suddenly broke out and both men were stabbed about 9.30pm, Victoria Police said.

Gruber-Terrick was a member of the Fitzroy Stars Football Club, which paid tribute to the 23-year-old on Friday.

“We are mourning the sudden loss of one of our beloved players, who was a true gentleman at our club, wore his heart on his sleeve and let his football do the talking,” the club wrote on social media.

‘We also send our deepest condolences to his teammates and everyone close to Karl.

‘Rest in peace.’

‘Heart of gold. You will never be forgotten,’ said a loved one.

“Such a beautiful young man gone too soon,” said another.

“Always such a polite and respectful young man,” said a third.

A manhunt continues after the incident and detectives say they believe a man fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson of the Serious Crime Division told reporters the stabbing occurred after a private birthday party turned sour.

He said an argument ensued before the fight spread to Observatory Street.

“It was a private birthday party that should have been a birthday celebration, (but) unfortunately had this tragic outcome,” Detective Stevenson said.

He said police are now looking to speak to party members who they believe left the scene before police arrived.

“We understand there were probably about 20 people involved in the fight and several people left before we arrived,” he said.

“There are several people we have not spoken to yet and we are working to get in touch with those people.”

Residents were told to stay home Friday while police searched for the man.

Neighbors were surprised to hear sirens on a normally quiet street.

AAP was told there was a party at the house in question on Thursday night, which may have gotten out of control.

“It’s very scary,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified.

“We actually saw the police coming for quite a while, but the police told us to stay inside our houses for our own safety.”

The farm, which is on Thompsons Road, is relatively new and the first residents moved in about seven years ago, neighbors said.

Two SES tents remained on the street, one of them covering what was believed to be a body after coroners arrived at the scene at around 9am on Friday.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
