A teenager was decapitated in a shark attack after he went swimming off the coast of Jamaica.
Jahmari Reid’s body was reportedly found with his head missing and his left arm bitten off.
The 16-year-old had gone spearfishing near the popular tourist town of Montego Bay on Monday, local police said.
The high school student went missing after going into the water alone and his body was recovered Tuesday.
His heartbroken father, Michael Reid, was on the beach when divers brought his son’s remains to land.
Jahmari Reid, 16, had gone spearfishing near the popular tourist town of Montego Bay.
The high school student is pictured with his father, taxi driver Michael Reid.
Residents of the town of Falmouth gathered on the beach as the body was recovered.
“I can’t believe that he went out to sea alone yesterday (Monday) and that was the result. It’s sad to know. I feel very bad,” he told Jamaican media.
The taxi driver said he had tried many times to dissuade his son from his hobby of underwater fishing and that they often argued about him going out.
Images from the scene showed dozens of horrified locals gathered on the beach in the town of Falmouth on the island’s north coast.
Fisherman Christopher Reynolds said a group of divers found Jahmari’s body after launching a search Tuesday morning.
He said the group had spotted a huge tiger shark near where the body was found shortly after finding a severed arm in the water.
“All the fishermen went there and as they were diving to get it out, they saw the big shark. They shot at it but didn’t catch it,” he told the Jamaican Observer.
He added that they hoped to find the killer shark and locate the boy’s severed head.
