A new documentary series has revealed horrifying details about the murderous life of notorious serial killer Charles Manson before he unleashed his terror on the state of California.

Peacock’s three-part series ‘Making Manson’ revisits the criminal’s life in his own words with the help of 20 years of phone calls he made to a friend.

Manson, who died in 2017, infamously led the ‘Mansion family’ cult in the late 1960s and early 1970s that murdered at least nine people, including actress Sharon Tate.

An audio recording featured in the series has shockingly revealed that Manson “engaged in a couple of murders” while living in Mexico in the 1960s.

‘Look, there’s a whole part of my life that no one knows about. I lived in Mexico for a while. I went to Acapulco, stole some cars,” Manson can be heard saying in a phone call, in a short clip posted by Peacock.

‘I just got involved in things that are beyond me, man. He got involved in a couple of murders. I left my 357 Magnum in Mexico City and left some dead on the beach.

The series focuses on Manson’s life before establishing the “family”, whose members were mostly young women.

Phil Kaufman, a former cellmate, detailed his experience living with Manson.

“Charlie was very good at being evil and not showing it,” he said. “Anything that distracted him from his game plan at that moment, he would crush it, but he did it with velvet gloves,” he said.

Former Manson associates and “family” members said they didn’t think much about his criminal record, which included arrests for rape and robbery, before the sensational murders of Tate and others.

“They told me he was out of jail or prison or whatever; I never knew the details, and that didn’t mean much in the ’60s,” said music producer Gregg Jakobson. ‘But if we knew he had murdered someone, it would be different. But he had just gotten out of jail, that’s all we knew.

Dianne Lake, a former member of the “family,” added: “I knew he had been in prison for taking a girl across the state line. It seemed minimal at the time.”

The notorious Cincinnati killer languished in prison after his 1971 conviction for conspiracy to commit murder.

After spending a decade behind bars for check forgery in the 1960s, Manson is said to have pleaded with authorities not to release him because he considered prison his home.

While behind bars, he became obsessed with music, believing that his musical talent would bring him fame and followers.

He was eventually released in San Francisco and began to gain followers, mostly women, who believed he was Jesus Christ.

The “family” eventually established a commune-like base where Manson manipulated the group with drugs and supervised orgies.

By the summer of 1969, Manson had failed to sell his songs and the rejection set him on a murderous path.

The public first heard about Manson when actress Sharon Tate, 26, was brutally murdered in her home.

She was eight months pregnant with her husband Roman Polanski’s child when she was stabbed to death, an X-shaped cut was made on her stomach and one of her breasts was cut off.

In addition to Tate’s murder, Manson ordered his “family” to murder six other victims.

Manson was eventually revealed as the mastermind.

He was given the death penalty, but it was changed to nine consecutive life sentences after California abolished the death penalty.
