The user who posted the video revealed what led to the orangutan’s brutal act.
“He was thrown into another enclosure with 2 orangutans,” they said.
(The orangutan) first threw the possum on the ground, then he chased it up to the top (sic) and started poking it with a stick.
The video was quickly flooded with comments from some who pointed out the funnier side of the orangutan’s gesture, despite its brutality.
“Damn, that was like an Olympic level discus throw,” one user said.
“This is horrible and I can’t stop laughing,” another wrote.
“It was personal,” posted another.
Other users, however, were more sympathetic to the possum’s plight.
“Can you please stop making fun!!!” we wrote.
“Aww, poor opossum!” »wrote another.
A zoo visitor who witnessed the orangutan’s brazen act revealed that the monkey (pictured) had poked the possum with a stick moments earlier, before throwing the marsupial into another enclosure. orangutans.
A Perth Zoo spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the possum was spotted after being dumped.
“Our animal experts confirmed that this possum was taking advantage of the orangutan’s warm and cozy nest during the cooler temperatures, and on this occasion the orangutan was alarmed to find an unknown occupant in its bed,” the spokesperson said.
“Rest assured, the possum was seen running away after being evicted. It is a very robust species.
The spokesperson explained that opossums often find their way into orangutan enclosures, which are built on higher ground.
“Orangutan habitat is an outdoor environment, and opossums, which also live high up, just like orangutans, are known to inhabit aerial territories,” the spokesperson said.
“Even though every effort is made to keep them out, the height presents some challenges and sometimes the orangutans will evict a few opossums themselves.”
