Israel bombs Gaza, Palestinians fire rockets, and Egypt tries to broker a cease-fire
Palestinian gunmen in Gaza resumed firing rockets into Israel early Saturday morning after Israeli warplanes bombed Islamic Jihad targets in the Strip on Friday evening, as fighting entered its fifth day.
Egypt is trying to mediate a truce in the confrontation that has so far killed at least 33 Palestinians and one Israeli.
Violence between Israelis and Palestinians has been going on for more than a year, and has claimed the lives of more than 140 Palestinians and at least 19 Israelis and foreigners since January.
The IDF said it bombed Islamic Jihad’s command centers and rocket launchers in its pre-dawn operations. Black and white aerial footage released by the army showed explosions and clouds of smoke rising from bombed sites.
