Mushrooms are not only used in cooking, as it seems they may be a secret weapon against unruly hair.

Technology company Dyson, known for its bagless vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans, has come up with the idea as it moves into the beauty products market.

Fungal chitosan, derived from the cell walls of oyster mushrooms, is used as the active ingredient in the hair serum.

Company founder Sir James Dyson told The Guardian: “The complex macromolecule helps create flexible bonds that hold hair strand by strand, for twice the hold, movement and shine.”

The firm has ventured into hair care with the Supersonic hairdryer and Airwrap styling tool. It is not alone in betting on mushrooms, with mushroom-based products becoming more common in the health and beauty sectors.
