The protests took place in Victoria Park, a traditional location for demonstrations and wake, and the surrounding streets.

Police action was a quick response to a meeting billed as an & # 39; emergency call & # 39; for autonomy for the former British colony that was promised its freedom when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

The fast-moving people walked through the Causeway Bay shopping area to the park, some erected metal gates to build street barriers, their actions masked by others with umbrellas. Activists also threw at least one gas bomb.

Many sang the British and American folk songs, waved multinational flags and called for independence, a red line for leaders of the Communist Party in Beijing who have vowed to crush such a move.

The police who used megaphones warned them to spread and said they would be prosecuted for holding an illegal meeting during the 22nd consecutive weekend of protest.

The police also raised a black flag, warning of tear gas, with activists running around the park in all directions.
