Honda recalls half a million cars from the market due to seat belt failure

Date:

Honda said in documents released Wednesday by US safety regulators that the surface coating on belts can deteriorate with heavy use over time.

Honda has decided to recall half a million cars from the US and Canadian markets to fix a problem that prevents seat belts from being properly fastened.

The recall includes several of the best-selling Honda models between 2017 and 2020, such as the CR-V, the 2018 and 2019 Accord models, the 2018-2020 Odyssey models and the 2019 Insight model.

The 2019 and 2020 Acura RDX models will also be recalled.

Honda said in documents released Wednesday by US safety regulators that the surface coating on belts can deteriorate with heavy use over time.

Also, the belt release button can shrink in low temperatures, increasing friction and preventing the buckle from closing fully which could cause the occupant to become unrestrained in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of injury.

Honda said that no injuries have been recorded as a result of this defect so far.

And the American Associated Press said that car owners will be notified of messages starting on April 17.
