Gold Logie winner Georgie Parker has opened up about the surprise clause in her home and away contract.

The 59-year-old has played the role of Roo Stewart in the hit Channel Seven soap for 13 years.

But next month the actress will take a break from show business to lead the cast of a new play by David Williamson, The Great Divide, at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre.

Georgie revealed that the only rule she had included in her contract included being able to do other projects while working on the show.

“It was written in my contract that if I could do a play, they would release me,” the actress said. The Daily Telegraph.

“It’s nice to go away and just stretch your wings in a different environment and then come back because you appreciate it even more for what it gives you and the people there.”

Georgie will star alongside Kate Raison in The Great Divide when it opens on March 8 at the Ensemble Theater in Kirribilli.

Production is scheduled to run through April 27.

It comes a year after the actress announced plans to leave the show for an extended break to pursue her theater dreams.

The actress insisted that the departures were only temporary and that she had no plans to leave the soap opera.

Georgie is one of Australia’s best-loved stars and has appeared in A Country Practice and All Saints, winning two Gold Logies for the latter.

“It was written in my contract that if I could do a play, I would be released,” the actress told the Daily Telegraph.

The star married her husband Steve Worland in 1999 and the couple welcomed their daughter Holly in 2000.

The actress told TV Week in April last year that she felt the burden of juggling her career and being a new mother at the time.

“I got married and became a mother when I won the first Gold Logie,” she said. ‘I was torn between many things; It was a very stressful moment.

“The struggle I had was that I had never pursued that kind of success, so when I got it, I did it more because I wanted the show to be successful.”
