Just a day after Harris, 59, announced his casting, audiences began feverishly speculating about which actor would play him on the NBC late-night comedy show.

Following confirmation that Maya Rudolph will reprise her role as Harris on the show during the 2024 presidential race, many were left guessing who her scene partner will be on SNL’s political sketches this election season.

While the list of proposed names for X included stars ranging from Kelsey Grammer to Drew Carey, the clear favorite was none other than Steve Martin.

On Tuesday, Martin’s name quickly began trending on X (formerly known as Twitter) as many commented on the uncanny resemblance between him and the 60-year-old Minnesota governor.

Following Walz’s selection, one X user wrote: ‘SNL, call Steve Martin NOW.’

That post got more than 9,000 retweets.

“If Steve Martin becomes a regular on SNL for the first time thanks to Tim Walz, it will be the best evidence of a miracle I’ve ever seen,” wrote another.

A third said: “If we don’t get Steve Martin to be Tom Walz on SNL, I’ll be disappointed at the missed opportunity.”

Others admitted they would be “heartbroken” to see another actor play Walz.

Digital media company Betches even shared a ‘Harris Walz’ campaign poster with Rudolph and Martin on it.

After seeing the posts, the legendary comedian, 78, weighed in on rumors about him potentially playing Harris’ running mate.

“I just found out Tim Walz wants to tour with Marty Short,” Martin joked in a post on Instagram’s Threads.

Martin was referring to his and Short’s upcoming live shows, titled The Dukes of Funnytown, which will take place across the country this fall.

Martin later confirmed that SNL creator Lorne Michaels offered him the job.

“I wanted to say no, and by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin told the Los Angeles Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impersonator. You need someone who can really get the guy.’ I was cast because I have gray hair and glasses.”

Martin stressed that one factor in his decision to reject the offer was that it is an “ongoing commitment.”

“It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impersonator to do that. They’re going to find someone really, really good. I’d be hard pressed,” he told the outlet.

Rudolph will play Vice President Kamala Harris.

Ever since President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race for the White House, fans have been rooting for the chameleon-like actress to reprise her role.

“Ladies, did you hear that right? Take a nap while you can because you’re going to be so busy. #Kamala2024,” one fan advised on Instagram.

“Are you putting on your Kamala wig? We’re waiting for you, MAMALA,” wrote another.

In a 2019 interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Harris stated that she was flattered by the performance.

“I will tell you that I have every intention of making sure that she (Rudolph) has eight good years of work on SNL,” he said at the time.

The versatile actress won an Emmy Award in 2020 for her portrayal of then-Senator Harris.
