The original Standard hotel, a beloved celebrity hot spot on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, has announced that it has closed today after 22 years of operation.
The hotel, bar and restaurant, opened by hotelier Andre Balazs in 1999, became a favorite haunt for a host of stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman and Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the original investors.
However, celebrity support has waned in recent months amidst strict restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and coupled with a rise in rent, the hotel is unable to support itself, revealing in a statement that it is now ‘impossible’ to stay open.
Shuttered: The Standard in West Hollywood announced that it is closing as of today, blamed for a “ significant lease increase, making operation of the property impossible ”

“With pain in our hearts, we have to announce the closure of The Standard, Hollywood, which will close its doors indefinitely on Friday, January 22,” read a statement on the hotel’s website.
Luxury: The hotel group also owns the Chateau Marmont Hotel in LA
“Despite 22 years of unconditional love for our hotel, our guests, our team and our community, the hotel has been unable to prevent a significant rent increase, making the operation of the property impossible.”
A representative of the hotel group told me Los Angeles Times that Ferrado Group, a real estate investment company that owns their lease, has increased the rent in 2019. It had become too expensive, despite attempts at renegotiation.
“Living with personality and personalities, and the backdrop to countless legendary stories, Hollywood was the birthplace of The Standard’s culture,” the statement continued.
It came to life through its timeless design, live music performances in Desert Nights, blue Astroturf pool scene, living art in “The Box” and the many late, hazy nights in our nightclub incarnations: Purple Lounge, Mmhmmm and Giorgio’s.

While there are and will come more standard hotels, there will never be another standard, Hollywood. And while it is painful to say goodbye, we know that the community we have inspired will live on. Thanks for everything. We are eternally grateful. ‘
Standard International, the parent company that owns the hotel, also owns other outposts of The Standard in New York, Miami and London, although Hollywood’s was the first.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Benicio del Toro were all investors at the Hollywood location.
Standard International, of which Balazs stepped down as chairman in 2017, also owns the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles and Chiltern Firehouse in London.
