Holey Moley closed one of its Sydney franchises seven years after it first opened.

The mini golf course in Newtown, in the city’s inner west, first welcomed customers in 2017, but closed its doors on May 12.

A leasing sign now sits atop the venue, while the movie theater-style signs out front that once had prices and mini-golf details are now blank.

“As we come to the end of our lease period, we want to thank the incredible Newtown community for their fantastic support and for completing literally hundreds of thousands of rounds of mini golf over the last seven years,” Holey Moley said in a statement.

It is unclear why the mini golf venue did not continue with the lease, but a spokesperson for Holey Moley’s parent company Funlab said staff had been offered positions at other Sydney branches.

The Newtown branch was one of the first Holey Moley locations to open.

It was located along the busy strip of King Street, but after the closure was made public, many Newtown locals said the venue should return to what it once was – the Sandringham Hotel.

‘Thank God! Make sure it’s a live music venue again please!’ one commented on an Instagram video of the closing.

“I went last year, the place was falling apart…” said another.

“It needs to be restored and reopened like The Sando,” one wrote.

Holey Moley offers 18 holes of mini golf, plus private karaoke rooms and a bar.

It has around 30 locations across Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Canberra, Queensland and Western Australia.
