Hillary Clinton is facing a backlash from conservatives online after calling Donald Trump a “danger to the country” less than 48 hours after a second assassination attempt on her life.

The former Democratic presidential candidate made the comments during an interview on MSNBC with host Rachel Maddow on Monday night while promoting her new book.

“I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for the press to have a consistent narrative about how dangerous Trump is,” Clinton said.

He suggested that journalists should cover the “object” by saying, “Well, the object in this case is Donald Trump, his demagoguery, his danger to the country and the world, and stick with it.”

Conservatives and Trump supporters seized on the online comments.

“Hillary Clinton knows exactly what she’s doing here,” Trump’s son Donald Jr. posted on X.

He accused his father’s former political rival of “deliberately fanning the flames of left-wing violence to further endanger his life.”

Conservative political commentator Liz Wheeler wrote that Clinton’s comments “are the rhetoric that spawned TWO assassination attempts on Trump.”

Another X user wrote: “Hillary Clinton couldn’t even wait 48 hours after an assassination attempt to tell the whole world that Donald Trump is a danger to our country and the world. Unbelievable.”

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested Sunday after the second assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate while he was playing a round of golf Sunday at his club in Palm Beach, Florida.

In the interview, Maddow shared her observation that she still believes the media is teaching Trump that “the more offensive he is, the more he can completely dominate the media space.”

Maddow then asked Clinton if there was any way to keep people from taking “that bait.”

In her response, Clinton criticized the press for its handling of coverage of Trump.

“The press is not in a position to cover Trump as it should,” Clinton said. “It is going from one scandal to another. What was scandalous three days ago is no longer on the front pages, even though it threatens the physical safety of so many people.”

The former Secretary of State specifically mentioned immigrant safety.

Clinton criticized the press, saying it was “merciless in what they saw as President Biden’s problems in the debate and called for him to withdraw,” she said.

Clinton said she believes Donald Trump has disqualified himself “time and time again from being a presidential candidate, let alone being president.”

The former first lady and senator also suggested that Trump is counting on people being desensitized to his comments. She warned that Americans should take Trump “both seriously and literally.”

Clinton went on to criticize the former president for “failing to protect American lives during Covid” as well as “his romance with dictators.”

“We cannot go back and give this dangerous man another opportunity to harm our country and the world,” Clinton repeated.

She did not mention or was asked about the assassination attempt on Trump’s life in the clip.

Later in the interview, Clinton and Maddow discussed Russian disinformation operations and how they use Americans willingly or unwittingly to spread Russian propaganda.

Clinton said it was important to point the finger at the Russians, but she also said there were Americans involved in propaganda.

She suggested that filing civil or criminal charges against them would be a “better deterrent because the Russians are unlikely to ever be prosecuted in the United States.”

Conservatives, including Trump’s own running mate, criticized the comments.

“Hillary Clinton calls for censorship, but she’s actually calling for violence,” JD Vance said in a post on X.

This comes after US officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in Washington confirmed this summer the existence of a Russian plan to install Trump in the White House.

Earlier this month, the United States announced sanctions, indictments and confiscated web domains that officials say Russia used to spread disinformation.
