Suspected human bones have been found in a popular national park, prompting a wider search of the area.

A hiker stumbled upon the gruesome discovery in Springbrook National Park, in Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland, about 11.35am on Friday.

A crime scene was set up on Repeater Station Road while an investigation was launched, Queensland Police confirmed on Saturday.

“Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances,” police said.

“Searches are being carried out in the area today.”

Springbrook National Park is about an hour’s drive west of the Gold Coast and is popular with tourists and hikers for its spectacular waterfalls, rainforest and ancient trees.

The park, covering 6,197 hectares, is part of Australia’s Gondwana Rainforests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
